Why the company joined DPOC
“By becoming members, we gained access to a wider network of industry peers and established companies, opening the door to valuable collaborations and new partnerships,” says Tina Wilfeard, communications specialist at Vertex Optics. “This increased credibility and visibility in the defense and high-tech sectors is crucial to strengthening our position in securing coveted contracting opportunities.”
How they got their start
Company founders Joe Serio and Jayson Tierson had a shared vision for a new venture, as they saw companies in the precision optics sector struggle to balance large-scale production with the personalized attention needed for complex specialty projects. They both saw an opportunity to create a nimble, customer-focused company.
With nearly three decades of experience, Tierson’s journey began in 1996 as an optical fabrication technician, working his way through companies like Optimax Systems, Inc., Corning Tropel, and Coherent before spending over a decade at OptiPro Systems as Director of Technology Solutions. His expertise in product development, business growth, and advanced optical manufacturing continues to shape both the industry and the team at Vertex Optics.

Serio began his career in 1995 as an optical fabrication technician. His background in business strategy and operational efficiency ensured the company’s processes would be both scalable and customer centric. An expert in manufacturing techniques and Lean Principles, he holds an A.A.S. in Optical Systems Technology from Monroe Community College and completed the Rochester Technology and Manufacturing Association’s mini-MBA program through Rochester Institute of Technology.
Vertex Optics worked through early challenges—securing the right facility, building a trusted supplier network, attracting top talent—to grow into a respected business. Today, Vertex has a reputation for adapting to change, from expanding its capabilities to investing in advanced machinery. And the team stays at the forefront of new developments in the field through close relationships with universities, research labs, and industry consortia.
With core values like uncompromising quality, customer-focused solutions, and continual growth, Vertex Optics is poised to shape the future of precision optics manufacturing.
