Is there a need for precision optics technicians in your region? Can you quantify that need?

Describe all programs at your institution that offer a degree- or certificate-granting program related to optics manufacturing and the number of years it has been in place.

If there currently isn’t a program offered related to optics manufacturing, describe the reasons why your institution is considering establishing one.

Has a leader been identified who will run the optics program? If yes, describe their background (education; years in optics industry; experience teaching at college, high school, or vocational training level; experience as administrator at college level).

Describe the level of support expected to be provided and documented by the senior administration of the institution.

Describe the physical space available at your college that can be devoted to the optics technician training program.

Does the program have the equipment needed to run the optics program? List equipment. If it does not, list the equipment that is needed.

Has your institution identified faculty who will teach the program and/or maintain the lab and other facilities? If yes, describe their background (education; years in optics industry; experience teaching at college, high school, or vocational training level; experience as administrator at college level). Describe the mix of full-time versus adjunct faculty who will be part of the program.

Describe the plan to sustain the program beyond AmeriCOM funding.

To what degree does your institution and the optics program in particular deliver courses online?

Describe the ways your institution delivers courses to area high schools, what they cost the student, and how much college credit the student receives. (e.g., Dual-Credit, Postsecondary Enrollment Options, Concurrent Enrollment, Fast Track, P-Tech, etc.)

Is the optics program at your institution part of a 2+2 program with any colleges/universities?

Do you expect the optics program to be supported by the regional optics community? Describe.

Does your institution have established partners in the optics industry and /or with optics companies that are outside of your region? Describe these relationships.

Identify specific, key individuals at your institution and in your regional industry group who communicate with your region’s Washington D.C. congressional delegation.

AmeriCOM is developing a national marketing campaign to raise awareness about the field of optics in general and the opportunities it presents for a solid career path and to support our partner institution’s student recruitment effort. How do you plan to market the precision optics technician program at your institution? What is your target audience for entrants to this program?
